Benefits I Find as a Parent Blogging Instead of Vlogging
There are so many different platforms out there to share ideas and stories on.
Some people choose to stream on a podcast, others vlog, and some blog.
Once I knew I wanted to create and share content, blogging is what seemed the most natural and comforting to me.
Podcasting
Some people may be comfortable talking, but I personally don't like the sound of my voice. I've been complimented on my voice before, but I just don't feel comfortable using it for a recording.
Plus, if I were to stream on a podcast to share my content, I would want to prepare some sort of script in advance anyways and not just go completely off the cuff.
Some people have a natural gift for gab, but that didn't feel right for me. I tend to fumble on my words just trying to check out at the grocery store.
Vlogging
Similar to podcasting, vlogging requires a decent grasp of oral communication.
Well at least I think that would be ideal, but I know some can get away with just rambling incoherently and still get a decent following.
However, there is also the visual element. To hop on a camera and videotape yourself sharing a story, one might want to doll up or look a little more presentable.
While I always want to look decent, I can't say I'm always camera ready.
As a working mom of 3 little boys who juggles various jobs and hobbies, my looks sometimes take a backseat. Sometimes they're just left completely at home in the closet.
I'm actually typing this post up as I sit in my minivan with no makeup on, a messy bun, and in an oversized shirt with leggings on... so glamorous- haha.
In all sincerity, some people are comfortable just hopping on a camera no matter how they look, and that's fine! It's just not for me unless I'm dressed to impress or look more so a certain way.
If the videos were just for home movies and to share with family, that's one thing. But to broadcast publicly, on the world wide web, that's a whole other story to me.
Blogging
Blogging attracted me from the get-go. I love reading and enjoy writing.
Writing is one of the art forms I have always found to be therapeutic. I get to jot down all of my ideas quietly and get lost in the words. I always feel like my mind is clearer after writing or typing up something.
It's one of the reasons I use to love writing poems and journaling when I was a kid.
My sentiment for blogging grew deeper as a parent because I could look up something I wanted to read more about from others' experiences and it wouldn't create any noise. I could be reading others' blogs quietly while putting my babies to bed or right next to my husband while he's sleeping and not interrupting anyone.
It's also helpful when I've been on the go and just want to scroll straight to the content I was looking for, instead of listening or watching a video full of fillers just to wait for a 10-second clip of information.
Now as a blogger myself, I revel and seize the quiet moments of nap or bedtime to type up the stories and experiences I wish to share. The kids sleeping, I have found, to always be the best time to blog, edit, or update posts.
An additional note I find about blogging is it allows for easy and usually seamless editing when it's needed. I don't have to sift through hours of videos or audio. I can quickly skim through the written content and see what needs to get done. It's just an added bonus as a busy parent. Every minute is precious!
Would I consider other platforms down the road?
Absolutely!
I think keeping an open mind about how I can share with others is important. So I may find myself vlogging or podcasting eventually.
But for now, I will continue to just tap away on my keyboard and snap pictures as my life continues to send me on adventures.
