Visiting the Home Alone House

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

Seeing the Home Alone House and Things To Do in the Area

Last year I introduced my five year old to the Christmas classic, Home Alone. He absolutely loved the movie and was in fits of laughter for most of those outlandish, burglar scenes.

Shortly after moving to the Great Lakes area, we realized we were very close to the actual house used in the movie. When the movie mentioned they were from Chicago, they meant it! Well, 30 minutes north of the city, but close enough. We were so excited to check it out, and my five-year-old got a kick out of seeing the house in person.

Located at 671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka, Illinois, this house is still frequently visited by fans even 31 years after its release. For obvious reasons, traffic around that street increases tremendously around this time of year.

Many people wonder if they can tour the house, but no. You can not enter the house or even step on the property under normal circumstances.

It is privately owned and is occupied by its residents. There is even a fence up to mark the property lines. You are, however, allowed to drive by or use the public sidewalk to take a quick picture.

If you do choose to take a picture, I can't emphasize enough to please do so quickly! It is a residential neighborhood and the two-lane street is pretty narrow.

Other Things to Do in the Area

After checking out one of the most famous movie houses of all time, you might wonder what to see and do in the area.

There are plenty of shopping centers and restaurants very close by to pick from!

With it being winter, we usually like to grab coffee or hot chocolate and continue to drive around the area. Most of the homes do a fantastic job with lights and Christmas decorations.

The church from that movie is also nearby. It's located at 924 Lake Street, Oak Park, Illinois.

If you want to do a walk-through holiday lights show, the Chicago Botanic Gardens always puts on a beautiful display. And it's only about 12 minutes north of the house. However, make sure you check the website before you go. Tickets need to be reserved ahead of time.

There is also, of course, the city of Chicago itself. It's about a 30-minute drive south from there. And with it being the city, the list of things to do is endless!

I hope this post gave you ideas of what to do in the area if you want to check out the Home Alone house.

Have fun and happy holidays!
