Fall Arts and Crafts for Kids

Updated: Oct 31, 2021

Fall always brings some of the most perfect weather you could ask for. A crisp cool breeze, sunny skies, and comfortable temperatures. Most days are great to get outside with the kids and enjoy some activities going on in your backyard or town- such as jumping in leaf piles, apple or pumpkin picking, a brisk walk, harvest festival, or maybe even a bonfire.

However, not all days can be so picturesque. Some days bring the rain. And while jumping in muddy puddles might be tempting after the rain has stopped, the kids might need some activities to pass the time inside. Cartoons and toys are great, but I find that arts and crafts are another great outlet. They provide a lot of fine motor practice, some quiet time, and a chance for creativity to shine.

My little ones absolutely love to get their hands dirty, so activities that include paint, glue, and other sticky substances are always a hit. If I've just described your little ones too, then keep scrolling for some fun Fall-themed arts and crafts ideas! Most of these are pretty easy to accomplish on a whim as they are created with things you can easily find around the house or even just outside in the yard.

5 Arts and Crafts for Little Hands

Pinecone Bird Feeders

  1. Tie a piece of string or yarn to a pinecone.

  2. Using a spoon, have the kids coat the pinecone in peanut butter (or another edible, sticky alternative).

  3. Then help them roll it in some wild bird food (or other animal-safe ingredients such as uncooked rice, or unsalted nuts, and sunflower seeds).

  4. Hang up outside for the birds to enjoy. (At least until a squirrel gets to it, haha.)

Leaf Wreath

  1. Collect various leaves. The more colors, the better!

  2. Cut out the center of a paper plate. (Alternatively, you could cut a donut shape out of construction paper or cardboard.)

  3. Glue down the leaves in various sizes and colors around the circle.

*To make it a learning moment for your pre-schooler, encourage them to name the color as they are pasting it down. You could also try to challenge them by following some sort of pattern. (i.e. Red, orange, yellow, red, orange, yellow...)

Trick-or-Treat Bags

  1. Find some simple, plain gift bags.

  2. Allow the kids to decorate them with colors and various Halloween themed stickers

  3. Have fun trick-or-treating with your custom bags!

Apple Stamp Prints

  1. Parents: slice an apple horizontally.

  2. Cut the rounded slices into various shapes.

  3. Let your little ones paint one side and stamp it onto paper.

*Arcylic paint shows up the best. But practically speaking, washable paint is the easiest to clean off of things!

Pinecone Turkey

  1. Rinse off a pinecone to make sure there's no dirt or bugs hiding in there.

  2. Use stickers, googly eyes, or personally made cut-outs from paper to attach eyes and a beak.

  3. Glue or tape a leaf or paper cut-outs to the backside to make the tail feathers.

Hope you and your little ones enjoy these ideas!

Happy Fall, Y'all!
